    Dog Pumpkin Pie

Dogs go crazy for this pumpkin pie! It's made with wholesome ingredients that you can feel good about. Plus, it's super easy to make!

a slice of pumpkin pie for dogs

It's the holiday season, and that means pumpkin pie!

Pumpkin pie is one of my all-time favorite desserts, and my dog Ranger feels the same way! I've been known to give him a taste when I have a slice, but with all the sugar, I know it's not the best for him.

So this year, I decided to make him his very own pumpkin pie with nourishing, healthy ingredients. Let me tell you- it was a hit!

So much so that I have to share the recipe. And don't worry if you've never made a pie before. This one is so easy to make with simple ingredients that you may already have.

    What do you need?

    Ingredients

    Crust Ingredients

ingredients to make dog pumpkin pie crust

For the crust, you'll need the following ingredients:

    • Oat Flour– Oat flour is sold in stores, but it's also super easy to make at home. Simply blend old-fashioned oats in a high-speed blender until the oats become a fine powder (about 30 seconds to a minute). Store your oat flour in an air-tight container for up to three months.
    • Salt- Any fine-grain salt will work fine.
    • Egg- You'll need one large egg for the crust. I always recommend buying pasture-raised eggs. They are the healthiest and kinder to the animals.
    • Olive Oil- Olive oil is okay for dogs in small quantities. It's good for their skin and coat.

    Filling Ingredients

ingredients to make the filling for dog pumpkin pie

For the filling, you'll need the following ingredients:

    • Pumpkin Puree- You'll need one 15 oz can of pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie mix).
    • Eggs- For the filling, you'll need two large eggs.
    • Milk of Choice- You can use regular dairy or plant-based milk, such as unsweetened almond milk.
    • Maple Syrup- Maple syrup is okay for your dog in small quantities, but feel free to omit it.
    • Oat Flour- Oat flour helps to thicken the filling.
    • Salt- A small pinch of salt is all you need for the filling.

    Instructions

This is the easiest pie you'll ever make! Follow these instructions.

    Make the Crust

    pie crust
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Set aside.
    • In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the eggs and olive oil. Pour the wet into the dry and mix with a large spoon until everything comes together and you can form a ball. Press the dough into the bottom of the pie plate and up the sides. Be sure to press evenly on the bottom to work the excess crust up the sides. Set aside.

    Make the Filling

    • Whisk together the pumpkin puree, eggs, milk of choice, and maple syrup in a large bowl. Whisk in the oat flour and salt until smooth and well incorporated.

    Bake

    • Pour the filling into the prepared pie crust and bake for 42-45 minutes or until a butter knife inserted into the center comes out (mostly) clean.
    • Transfer the pie to a cooling rack and allow it to cool completely before slicing and serving. My fur baby loves a dollop of whipped cream on his pie!

    FAQs

    Is pumpkin good for dogs?

Yes! Pumpkin is a nutritious treat for your dog. It contains vitamins like A, C, and E and minerals like potassium and iron. It also has a good amount of fiber, making it great for digestion.

    Can dogs have maple syrup?

Dogs can have maple syrup in small quantities. It's an excellent source of manganese and zinc which will help support your dog's immune system. But remember, the key is small quantities because maple syrup does have high sugar content.

What is the difference between canned pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie mix?

Canned pumpkin puree is simply pumpkin that has been cooked and pureed. Pumpkin pie mix is sweetened and flavored, so the two are not interchangeable in recipes.

You show oat flour in both the crust and filling however, in your directions for mixing the filling, you don’t mention the old flower. Should it be in the filling or not thank you.

Oat flour is in the crust and filling. If you take a look again, you'll see it's mentioned in step #1 under the filling instructions. Let me know if you try it!

Loved this recipe! I used small tart tins with the little disks in the bottom. They turned out perfect! I did add some water to the dough as i was working with it to keep it from cracking and was much easier to work with. I also added a dash of cinnamon.

Hi. My dog loves your pie. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I can't seem to get the crust to form. I tried the recipe twice to the T but the dough is crumbly and would not form unless I add more egg. Can you help me? Thanks.

It sounds like your dough is a bit too dry. Are you measuring your oat flour correctly? For next time be sure to spoon your flour into your measuring cup and level it off with a butter knife. If you scoop your measuring cup into the flour, it's likely that you will get too much flour. I hope this helps!

I use salt in my dog's pumpkin pie for flavor and nutrition. Dogs need a little salt in their diet. I use Celtic Sea Salt. It contains minerals like potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron. It's good for dogs and humans alike! I hope you try the recipe!
